Common description

'Ioannina' is the beautiful capital city of the Epirus region, with 110,000 inhabitants located at 500 meters above sea level. Dominated over the centuries by different peoples, it is the result of a harmonious and unique mixture of traditions and cultures. Lapped by the quiet and calm waters of Lake Pamvotis, Ioannina is a destination far from the most traveled routes, and for this reason it still retains its charm intact. Today an economic and cultural center, Ioannina was an important city of the Byzantine Empire, of the Despotate of Epirus and during the Turkish occupation. From the old town to the castle, from the bazaars to the monasteries: everything here speaks of history.

The Kastro, the old quarter within the walls, is the pulsating center of the city, consisting of a maze of alleys overlooked by buildings of Turkish origin. Small shops and old shops, especially of silver and bronze handicrafts, follow one another in the streets, giving you glimpses and photographic corners. Within these mighty Byzantine walls built on a suggestive promontory, you can visit the Archaeological Museum and the Civic Museum, which preserves a rich display of traditional local costumes. The Veli Pasha mosque, Casa Matei Hussein are some symbols of the multicultural power of the city, which has undergone Christian, Islamic and Jewish influences. In the central square, the Clock Tower, a meeting place and reference point. Ioannina is also home to an important and historic university, which makes it a cheerful and lively town, which can be found in the many young people who fill the modern cafes of Plateia Georgiou, on the lakefront.

Lake Pamvòtis, whose banks bathe the old city continues to exert a strong fascination on visitors for its legends. In the center of the lake, the islet of Nissi, reachable by boat, from the characteristic whitewashed village and monasteries. A few kilometers away, you cannot miss the Perama cave, found during the Second World War, with its splendid and unique limestone formations.
