A jewel of the Ionian Islands
Lefkada and the coast
Lefkada is surrounded by an intense blue sea, covered with wild olive trees and majestic cypresses. It is the favorite homeland for kite and windsurf enthusiasts. The island is connected via a bascule bridge to the mainland, a stunning area known as Costa Lefkada, more than 40km long. With its characteristic villages such as Paleiros, Mitikas and Astakos, the Coast alternates bays, small islets and isolated coves with wonderful and crystalline water, with fantastic views of Lefkada, Meganissi, Kalamos and Kastos. It is the ideal destination for those looking for holidays outside the traditional tourist destinations.
On the island of Lefkada the beaches can be reached via the main road which makes a circular route around the island. The western part is wilder, with a few villages on the mountains from which narrow and steep streets lead down to the marvelous white beaches, at the foot of caves and rocky coasts towards the open sea.
The eastern part, on the other hand, is flatter, with small bays and marinas, pebble beaches and emerald-colored water, with rich vegetation that reaches the sea. It is the most inhabited and popular area of the island, with shops, markets, pubs and taverns.
The Lefkada coast, all facing west, offers numerous beaches, coves and more or less hidden bays. The road is very convenient and runs along the coast. Anyone can look for their ideal beach, with fine sand or pebbles, pebbles or rocks, equipped or more free and wild: Lefkada satisfies even the most demanding traveller.
The beaches of Lefkada: follow our advice!
On the western part we find Aghios Ioannis - also called beach of the Mills - very long with gravel and more or less fine sand, with its four characteristic mills. In the afternoon with the arrival of the Mistral, the dominant wind of the area, it is the ideal place for the practice of Kite-surfing.
Pefkoulia is equipped and easily accessible, like Kathisma, a large inlet with deck chairs, umbrellas, bars and taverns. Protected by two rocky promontories is the Bay of Milos, ideal instead for those seeking absolute peace. Gialos is also within easy reach, with bright sea colors and wild nature.
Continuing south you will find Egremni, a sandy and pebble beach equipped with refreshment points, not easy to access but the stupendous turquoise color of the sea will repay the effort made to reach it. Immediately after the famous Porto Katsiki, one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, with a turquoise sea, a backdrop of white pebbles, a beach interspersed with sand and pebbles. It can be reached by 120 steps and is an unmissable stop for anyone visiting the island!
In the eastern part of the island: Ligia, Sivota, Nikiana and Nidri, small beaches, not very wide with mixed sand and pebbles, equipped with hotels and restaurants behind them where it is possible to rent boats and practice water sports.
In the southern part of the island, the fine sandy beach of Dessimi Bay and nearby a very suggestive cave, ideal for a dip in solitude. Mikro Gialos with white pebbles and emerald green sea, equipped with umbrellas and deck chairs.
And again, Vassiliki, a long beach of pebbles and sand, perfect for sailing and windsurfing, with its characteristic fishing village. From the port of Vassiliki you can reach the beach of Agiofili, a wonderful cove with crystal clear waters, equipped with umbrellas but without refreshment points.
The beaches of Costa Lefkada: follow our advice!
Starting from the southernmost part which is about 40km from Lefkada, in the area of Astakos, (the port that connects Kefalonia / Sami), there are several isolated beaches, including the one under the old monastery of Aghio Nikolaos just outside the village, in north direction. After about 5 km there is the bay of Marathias; a succession of small and enchanting coves to arrive after 10km at the beach of Agrilia, where there is also a rest area for campers.
A few more kms and you reach Mitikas with its long beach (4km) facing the charming island of Kalamos (400 inhabitants). Mitikas is a real Greek village still little affected by tourism. It is worth strolling through its narrow streets and perhaps stopping in a few small taverns: we recommend a small and charming bar just below the lighthouse.
After Mitikas always in a northerly direction, you can still find numerous coves and beaches with a truly fantastic sea, such as Ag. Dimitris beach a few kilometers before Paleros. Paleros is a village known for its private marina (Sunsail) and the small fishing port which still maintains its typical appearance, dotted with numerous taverns, bars and small shops. Do not miss Paleiros beach right in the center of the village and near the playground.
Immediately outside the village you reach a long and wide beach of fine sand with crystal clear water that slopes gently into the sea: it is Potamaki beach, ideal for families and safe for children, very large and has areas with beach bars, deck chairs and umbrellas.
A couple of km after Paleiros there is another small village, Pogonia with the beautiful beach of Ag. Giannis beach; a visit to Porto Varco is a must here, a spectacular inlet about 10-15 minutes away by car.
It should also not be forgotten that between the island of Kefalonia and the Lefkada coast there are dozens of small islands, some even uninhabited, such as Skorpios, Madouri, Meganissi, Arkudi, Atakos, Kalamos and Kastos.
