Common description
A curious chapter in Livadeia’s history is linked to the **Catalan domination**, a significant part of its medieval past. In 1311 AD, the Catalans of the Catalan Company (a group of mercenaries serving the Byzantine Empire) conquered the region, which remained under their rule for about 70 years until 1388 AD.
This period left a lasting mark on the multicultural character of the region and underscored Livadeia’s strategic importance during the Middle Ages. Today, the imposing **medieval castle** overlooking the town and several remnants are the main witnesses of the Catalan era in Livadeia.
The area is also famous for its natural beauty, mountain landscapes, and the springs of the Erkina River, boasting as many as 160 springs and several waterfalls, some of which can be found right within the town.
Strolling through its streets, visitors can discover traditional alleys, charming cafés, and a warm sense of hospitality, making Livadeia a delightful destination.
