The marvelous nature of Olympus of rich flora (over 1700 species, more than 20 of them endemic) and fauna (more than 30 species of mammals, 100 species of birds, 18 species of reptiles) left the modern Greeks no choice but proclaiming it the first National Park in 1938.

It was the first National Park in Greece to be so named in 1938 and covers an area of 45 km2 of oak, black pine, beech, white pine, alpine vegetation, for a total of 1,700 species of flora (23 of which are endemic) . The recorded fauna includes 32 species of mammals, 108 species of birds including rare vultures, many reptiles, insects and butterflies.
