Thiva

Common description

Thiva, also known as Thebes, is a city rich in history and culture. Built on seven hills, it was the birthplace of mythical figures such as Dionysus, Hercules and Oedipus, as well as the famous poet Pindar. The city prospered in antiquity until its destruction by Alexander the Great. Archaeological excavations have revealed that Thiva was inhabited as early as 5,000 years ago, with its original nucleus called Kadmia. In the city center you can still see the remains of the Palace and the seven Gates of Kadmia, also important in ancient Greek dramaturgy. The square of Kadmia is in the center of the city, where the Oracle of Tiresias and the hill of Amphion are located, full of archaeological finds. The surrounding area is full of interesting archaeological sites, such as the temple of Kaveiros and Paidas to the west, with a Hellenistic theater attached. Thiva was known in ancient times as "Aionion Pedion", or "eternal field", due to its majestic mountains and the valley that surrounds it. The view of the mountains at sunset is spectacular, enriched by the presence of the Elikonas and Parnassos mountains to the west of the city. To the east of the city is the artificial forest of Moschopodi, with the Church of Zoodohos Pigi and the Church of Evagelistis Loukas, which houses the ancient cemetery of Thiva and the marble tomb of Saint Luke. Thiva is located by the sea, with accessible beaches in the Gulf of Corinth and the North Gulf of Evian. Local traditions include the "Vlach Wedding", an annual celebration during Carnival featuring a wedding with Dionysian elements and traditional music. Agriculture and livestock farming are important to the city's economy, while in the surrounding villages you can enjoy local culinary specialties in the taverns.
