Common description
Veria, located in the Central Macedonia region of Greece, is a city rich in history and culture, often described as a bridge between the past and the present. Known in ancient times as Berea, it is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles for the visit of St. Paul, who preached to its inhabitants; today, the Tribune of St. Paul is one of its most emblematic monuments. The historic center of Veria is a mosaic of Byzantine, Ottoman and Macedonian influences, with cobbled streets, traditional houses and Byzantine churches, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Among the most charming neighborhoods are the Jewish area of Barbouta, with its ancient synagogue, and the Christian neighborhood of Kyriotissa. The city is crossed by the Tripotamos River, which offers picturesque views, and is surrounded by hills and mountains ideal for hiking. Veria is also a lively cultural center, with museums, festivals and local markets that highlight the culinary and artisanal traditions of the region.
