From Kalambaka, we reach Grevena, a picturesque town of 25,000 inhabitants located in the region of Western Macedonia. Crossed by the Grevenitis River, it is surrounded by mountains and lush forests, known for its pristine nature and tranquility. Grevena is known as the "Mushroom City" thanks to the abundance and variety of wild mushrooms that grow in the area, with various festivals dedicated to this local product. We stop for lunch (optional), and in the afternoon, we reach Veria, a famous town mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles for the visit of Saint Paul, who preached to its inhabitants; today, the "Palace of Saint Paul" is one of its most iconic monuments. Veria's historic center is a mosaic of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Macedonian influences, with cobbled alleys, traditional houses, and Byzantine churches, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Dinner (not included) and overnight stay.
Day 4
VERIA - VERGHINA - MONTE OLIMPO/SERPENTINE ROAD - LARISSA KM.200 (h.4:00)
Breakfast and departure for Larissa.
Not far from Veria, we find Vergina, the first capital of the Macedonian kingdom, where the tomb of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, was discovered in 1977. We'll have a guided tour of the magnificent archaeological site of the Royal Tombs, and then travel along the road that runs along the Aegean Sea at the foot of Mount Olympus, the highest peak in Greece (3,000 meters), the sacred mountain of the Gods, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1981. Here we find the most iconic road of our tour, the scenic and challenging Serpentine Road, with an elevation gain of 1,100 meters, 11 km of 38 hairpin bends to reach Karya, on the southern slopes of Mount Olympus! Free time for lunch and then continue to Larissa, the capital of Thessaly, where a well-deserved rest awaits us!
Dinner (not included) and overnight stay.
Day 5
LARISSA - GLYFA - AGIOKAMPOS - EDIPSOS - PEFKI KM.160 (h.4:00)
Breakfast and departure for the island of Evia.
Passing through the plain of Pharsalos, we cross Thessaly with its vast cotton plantations that make it Europe's leading producer. We skirt the vast Pagasetic Gulf and reach the small port of Glyfa, from where we take a 30-minute ferry to the island of Evia. We head to Edipsos, a town that has attracted illustrious visitors for millennia: Aristotle, Sulla, the Roman emperors Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, Constantine, and more recently Onassis, Callas, Greta Garbo, politicians, shipowners, industrialists, and artists. Thanks to 80 thermal springs of varying temperatures in public and private hydrotherapy centers or hotels, many find relief from chronic ailments; seawater or thermal water, mud baths, massages, or simply bathing in the sea where the springs flow into it. Lunch break (optional) and free time to soak in the hot springs. Arrival at the hotel in the late afternoon.
Dinner (not included) and overnight stay.
Day 6
PEFKI - PROKOPI - CHALKIDA KM.170 (h.3:30)
Breakfast and departure for Chalkida, the island's lively capital.
Today's route will allow us to appreciate the wild nature of North Evia, passing through quiet villages where time seems to have stood still… Drosini, Elinika, Kerasia, Rovies, Limni, until reaching Prokopi with its Orthodox monastery where the remains of Saint John the Russian are located. He was born in Russia in 1690 and was buried here after his death on May 27, 1730. After lunch, we'll travel through canyons, rivers, and mountains to Chalkida, the island's lively capital with 110,000 inhabitants. A stroll along the lively waterfront will take us past the unique Oedipus Channel, the Karababas Castle, the Red House, and the bust of Aristotle, who died here in 322 BC.
Dinner (not included) and overnight stay.
Day 7
CHALKIDA - LIVADIA - ARACHOVA - DELPHI KM.135 (h.3:00)
Breakfast and departure for Delphi.
Passing through Livadia, a town with a curious past linked to Catalan rule, dating back to 1310 AD when the mercenaries of the Catalan Company conquered the region and ruled it for approximately 80 years. An optional lunch stop is available, then we pass through Arachova at the foot of Mount Parnassus, a major winter ski resort, and finally reach Delphi, the center of the world. Here, with an authorized guide, we will visit the archaeological site dedicated to the god Apollo and the beautiful museum. Delphi was one of the most important centers of worship and pilgrimage in antiquity. Visiting the Oracle of Delphi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1972, means traveling to the heart of mythical and spiritual Ancient Greece.
Dinner (not included) and overnight stay.
Day 8
DELPHI - ITEA - GALAXIDI - LEPANTO KM.110 (h.2:30)
Breakfast and departure for Nafpaktos/Lepanto.
A scenic drive takes us through the sacred grove of Delphi, home to approximately two million olive trees, which, like a river with a large delta, reaches the sea.
A brief stop for coffee on the Itea waterfront and we begin our journey along the Gulf of Corinth, which offers spectacular views and picturesque villages such as Galaxidi, a tribute to Greek maritime art, embodying the spirit of the past in the captains' residences and neoclassical houses, with maritime-themed statuettes and house numbers, and two picturesque harbors. Glyfada faces the islet of Trizonia; lunch is optional, and then we reach the beautiful Venetian town of Nafpaktos, where the famous battle between the Holy League and the Ottoman Empire took place on October 7, 1571.
Dinner (not included) and overnight stay.
Day 9
LEPANTO - RIO/ANTIRIO - PATRASSO KM.40 (h.01:00)
Breakfast and departure for Patras
About ten kilometers after our departure, we stop to admire a masterpiece of modern engineering: the Rio-Antirio Bridge, which the Greeks call the "Poseidon Bridge." Built in just four years and inaugurated during the opening of the 2004 Olympic Games, at 3,000 meters in length, it is still the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world.
Shortly after, we reach Patras, and if time permits, we can visit the city's important archaeological museum with an impressive collection of Roman artifacts and mosaics; alternatively, we can relax on one of the beautiful beaches along the city's waterfront! Lunch is optional, and finally,
we arrive at the port of Patras on time for check-in and boarding the ferry for Italy.
