Common description
The village of Kalambaka sits at the foot of the Meteora, a group of monasteries built on spectacular natural sandstone pillars in central Greece.
Monks settled on these peaks as early as the 11th century.
The site has been classified by UNESCO as a unique phenomenon in terms of cultural heritage (frescoes, monastic life, construction method) and natural qualities.
Suspended in the air, between the earth and the sky, the rocks of Meteora are a place of the spirit, where the mystical sense of monasticism and orthodoxy is perceived.
Currently there are six inhabited and visitable monasteries: Agios Stefanos, Agia Triada, Gran Meteora, Varlaam, Roussanou and Agios Nikolaos.
However, Meteora is not only a space dedicated to faith, it is also one of the most beautiful and spectacular geological phenomena in the world, a place out of the ordinary and waiting to be discovered.
A curiosity for climbing lovers: Meteora are one of the most famous places for climbing. A climb that never seems to end, with an infinite number of different routes on the typical conglomerate of Meteora. For all fans an experience certainly not to be missed.
