Common description
Vergina, located in the Central Macedonia region of Greece, is a place of immense historical and archaeological value, known as the ancient city of Aege, the first capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia. This small village gained worldwide fame in 1977, when archaeological excavations led by Manolis Andronikos uncovered the Macedonian royal tombs, including the one attributed to Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. The Museum of the Royal Tombs is a must-see attraction, where visitors can admire rich treasures, weapons, armor and the famous golden oak crown. Vergina also offers a picturesque view of the Pierian mountains and a peaceful rural atmosphere. The ancient theater and the remains of the royal palace add to the charm of this archaeological site, which is one of the most important in Greece. The proximity to cities such as Veria and Thessaloniki makes Vergina an easily accessible destination for lovers of Greek history and culture.
