Common description
'Diakopto' is a small seaside town with a magnificent view of the Corinthian Gulf. The small town is mainly known for the "Odontotos" train which crosses the Vouraikos gorge on a beautiful route to 'Kalavrita' .
During the winter it becomes the starting point to reach the Kalavrita ski center.
During the rest of the year Diakopto as well as being a beautiful seaside resort is also an excellent starting point for discovering the area where there is no shortage of attractions such as the `` Mega Spilaion Monastery (Grotta Grande) one of the most important pilgrimage churches of Greece.
It is an eight-story monastery built in the natural opening of a cave on the Vouraikos River gorge. The location of this monastery is amazing and inside the monastery you will see wall paintings from 1653 and the iconostasis carved in wood. The monastery is probably the oldest in Greece and its foundation dates back to 362 AD. by two brothers from Thessaloniki, Simeon and Theodore. Historically it has been destroyed many times during hostile invasions.
Don't miss the miraculous and tiny church of Madonna Platoniotissa in Kalavrikta, created inside the trunk of a plane tree!
Just before Patras, the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, Rio-Antirio '' 'is definitely worth a visit, it was inaugurated in 2004 on the occasion of the Olympic Games hosted in Greece
