The islands of the Gulf of Athens
The marvelous islands of Athens, in the Saronic gulf, with crystal clear sea and enchanting coasts. Authentic Greece, less known to major international tourism - but equally dynamic and fascinating - is chosen as a preferred holiday destination by the Athenians themselves. From Piraeus, all the Saronic Islands can be reached in less than two hours.
In all the islands the beaches are both sandy and pebbly, with wonderful crystalline waters.
What to see and what to do: our suggestions
Spetses is so small that you can cycle around it in 4-5 hours. The beaches are sand and pebble and the most famous are Agia Pareskevi and Agia Anargyri. On the organized beaches it is possible to practice water sports and in some parts of the island, diving to admire the magnificent seabed. To see the very nice capital characterized by ancient buildings.
In Poros the beaches are located in the southern part of the island. We recommend Kanali Beach, with fine sand and very long. This beach offers a beautiful view of the open sea and can be reached by bus. Then follows Askeli Beach which is the longest and widest beach, the most popular and crowded. In fact, it is stocked with umbrellas, deck chairs, taverns and hotels. Similar is that of Monastiri Beach. Mikro Neorion, long and sandy, is shaded by tall pines that descend to the sea. Here you can find a water ski school and you can practice water sports such as water-polo. And again, Calypso Bay and the stupendous Megalo Neorion, with golden and very wide sand, where you can practice many water sports. In the area, taverns and restaurants offer the possibility of eating directly on the sand. It can be reached via a path directly from Mikro Neorion beach. Reachable by bus we then find Love Bay or lovers' beach, a wonderful bay of white pebbles and sand, ideal for those seeking refreshment in the shade of fresh pine trees whose forest behind ends right on the beach. Another beach is Russian Bay with large white pebbles and sand. It takes its name from a Russian fortification built there, the remains of which can still be seen today. Poros is in an enviable position for visiting the attractions of the area: Athens is only 1:00 am away by hydrofoil. The exclusive islands of Spetses & Hydra, or the more fashionable Aegina, can all be reached in 1 hour by hydrofoil. Poros is 500 m from the coast of Peloponnese, about 5 minutes by ferry boat. (from 06.30 to 22.30 every 30 minutes, cost €1.00 per person and €4.00 per car). You can make day trips to the famous theater of Epidaurus, Nauplius, Mycene, Argos, Tolo, the volcano of Methana, the Korinth canal (about 80 km), Portokeli and the bay of Ermioni. It is the ideal solution for visiting ancient Greece without having to sleep in the city.
The characteristic of Idra is the total absence of cars. To admire its monasteries, white stone houses and wonderful beaches, mules and donkeys are used. The beaches are often pebbly, rocky or gravel and can be reached by sea or by mule or on foot. We suggest the Mikro kamini one, ideal for families with children. To the south east of the island, San Nicola beach is ideal for diving, while Mandraki beach is ideal for surfing. Unmissable is the bay of Idra, overlooked by the simplicity of the white buildings and the magnificence of the monasteries.
Aegina is famous for the production of ceramics and the tasty pistachio. Due to its importance in antiquity, it offers many archaeological sites to see. The beaches on this island are very characteristic. The most popular is that of the small port of Agia, long and sandy, also suitable for children. Other beaches are Marathonas and Suvala, today one of the major tourist sites, also famous for its healing spas. Vagia and Perdika, renowned for the protection and care of wild animals from all over Greece. Worth seeing is the temple of Athena Aphaia which still has 25 columns intact. On Mount Oros the ruins of the temple dedicated to Zues. Also very interesting to visit the city of Aegina, where there is an interesting archaeological museum and the monastery of Agios Nektarios, popular among pilgrims.
