The island of the hero Ulysses
“Always keep Ithaca in mind. Getting there is what you are meant for”
Ithaca, Constantinos Cavafis
Famous throughout the world as the home of Odysseus, Ithaca symbolizes the return to refuge, discovery and fulfillment. Despite its proximity to Kefalonia (2 km north-east) it is an even more peaceful, quiet world, waiting to be discovered. At 27 kilometers in length and 6.5 kilometers of ample mountainous surface, it boasts numerous hiking and mountain biking trails in a sequence of blues and greens along the coast and through olive trees, cypresses, pines, oaks, strawberry trees and carobs on hills.
A wonderful traditional Greek island for your holidays.
Here you will discover the island's rich culture and why Ithaca holds such a special place in the hearts of those who live here and those who have visited. Ithaca remains untouched by the modern world and the crystal clear sea and verdant valleys and mountains are home to one of the friendliest communities in Greece.
Ithaca makes you feel at home. Ithaca has something for everyone.
Great beaches, hiking, boat trips, scuba diving, festivals and views, traditional food, entertainment, crowded bars or quiet solitude. Even in the height of summer you can find a secluded beach or a corner to contemplate your thoughts.
Every season has something special to offer. Let the local fisherman teach you how to fish for squid in October or walk the trails a goat herder, dance the night away in Kioni, Frikes or Vathy or walk to Exoghi on a spring day to discover the mountain top with the best view of northern Ithaca and the mainland. Saints' days, holidays, Easter and Christmas fill the whole year with opportunities. There is always something to celebrate on the island of Ithaca, Greece.
Beaches
Beach lovers will enjoy a multitude of choices that cover all tastes, from sand to pebbles, from rocky to green-covered backdrops, from quiet to busy ones. Some of them are: Lootsa, Filiatró, Sarakínniko, Dexá, Minnímata, Yidáki, Aetós, Áspros Yalós, Afáles, Kourvoólia.
Villages
The island's 3,000 inhabitants reside in some of the following villages:
• Vathý: marked by the characteristics of local architecture, it is the capital of the island and hosts the Maritime and Folklore Museum, as well as the Archaeological Museum of Ithaca. Vathý is built on a bay whose center is decorated by the tiny islet of Lazarétto, a former sanatorium and prison.
• Perahóri: a beautiful scenic village with a breathtaking view of the island. Built on the edge of the Afentikós Lógos forest, it is the perfect starting point for walks among the medieval ruins among the oak trees.
• Stavrós: Located in the north of the island, this village houses another Archaeological Museum, known for the 1st century BC clay mask that writes “ΕΥΧΗΝ ΟΔΥΣΣΕΙ” (= “a wish for Odysseus” in ancient Greek).
• Anoyí: an unmissable visit thanks to the vertical stones of the area (menhirs), the highest of which reaches up to 8 meters.
It might be difficult to date local dishes to the ancient era; however their taste is the same mythical. Try cod, tomato meatballs, fish savóro (fish fillet fried in vinegar, raisins, rosemary and garlic), tserepáto (red chicken meat grilled over charcoal in a clay pot) and, for dessert, rovaní (ground rice with honey).
